01Structural colour
Peacocks and some other birds have feathers with microscopic structures that reflect specific wavelengths of light. Because no pigment is involved, the colours don’t fade.
02Copying the design
Researchers are developing fade-resistant paints and fabrics that imitate these structures — another case of humans learning from designs in nature.
03What do you think?
Did structural colour come about by chance? Or was it designed?
