01A name, not just a title
In the original Hebrew text, God’s name appears about 7,000 times, written with four letters (YHWH), often called the Tetragrammaton. In English it is commonly rendered “Jehovah.”
“That they may know that thou alone, whose name is Jehovah, Art the Most High over all the earth.”
Psalm 83:18 · ASV
02Why many Bibles replace it
Over time, a superstition arose against pronouncing the name, and many translations substituted “LORD” in capital letters. Yet the Bible itself encourages us to use God’s name and make it known.
Jesus began his model prayer with the words “Hallowed be thy name” and said of his ministry, “I made known unto them thy name” (John 17:26).
03What the name means
Many scholars understand the name to mean “He Causes to Become.” It reflects that God can become whatever is needed to fulfil his purpose — and that his promises can be trusted.
